Description

Daviess County is a quiet rural community between the East and West Forks of the White River in Southern Indiana with a long and diverse history. This book has been prepared by the Daviess County Historical Society, in collaboration with M.T. Publishing, to collect and disseminate some of that history in photographic form. From coal mining to railroads, agriculture to industry, scholastic to religious life, you will find a wide selection of fascinating pictures from Elnora to Alfordsville and everywhere in between.

This book contains over 400 photographs from around Daviess County, some of which were donated especially for this book by county residents, others which have been in the collection of the Daviess County Historical Society for many years. All of them have been entrusted to the society at one time or another for preservation by people like you. Some photos submitted were not used, but remain part of the digital collection of the Museum. This effort on our part is very important to maintaining our historical record and we encourage everyone to search their closets, attics and trunks for any photos we can add to our collection. Of course, stories that go with the photos are as important as the photos themselves. Who knows, if this book sells we may do two or three more. Regardless, we will make these photos available to our public, now and into perpetuity.

The Daviess County Historical Society is dedicated to collection, preservation, research, organization, exhibition and/or acquisition of artifacts, documents, sites, and other historical relics, regardless of medium, which are significant to the history of Daviess County. From this collection we strive to educate by promoting historical study, striving to describe the social, political, industrial and educational progress of Daviess County, Indiana. The Society was founded in 1966 in coordination with the county sesquicentennial. Our Museum, in its third location, is currently at 212 East Main Street in Washington in the 1868 Masonic lodge building.
