Description
For over 100 years F. J. Reitz High School has sat high on a hill overlooking Evansville’s West Side. Conceived as the junior high to expand the educational opportunities for the working class children of the west side, it has grown into a high school with thousands of alumni who continue to have a strong attachment to the institution.
Starting in 1913 the Mothers’ Club at Centennial Elementary School and its principal began pressuring the school board to build a new junior high on Evansville’s West Side. After four years of petitions and meetings, the school board finally broke ground in Forest Hills. By September 3, 1918 the school was ready for its first students.
Over the years Reitz has excelled in many areas of academic and extracurricular activities. While it may be known most as a football school, Reitz has also had state champions and title winners in golf, track and field, swimming, wrestling, basketball and baseball. There was a time when Reitz’s speech team set the standard in the state and its band and choir have won numerous awards. Reitz was even home to the national FFA president in 1941-42.
Through the years, Reitz has become more than a school. It is something of a family with many students following in the footsteps of previous generations.
