About the Author

Steve Ford’s association with Bosse Field goes back beyond the last 25 years he spent covering games there for the Evansville Courier & Press, from which he retired in December 2013.

Ford first set foot on Bosse Field as a 13-year-old cub football hopeful at Central High School in 1965, when the facility was the Bears’ home field for both football and baseball. Over the next five years he went to hundreds of practices and played dozens of football and baseball games there for Central when the school was still located downtown just east of the current YMCA.

When Ford was a senior in 1970, Central lost Bosse Field as a practice facility because of the return of professional baseball with the Double AA Evansville White Sox. He returned to watch the Triple AAA Triplets as a fan while studying journalism at Indiana State and then spent a decade as a contractor before returning to writing as an outdoor columnist for the Sunday Courier & Press.

Ford continued to ease his way back into writing doing magazine work, advertising and even a little television before returning to his craft full time with the Evansville Courier, which later became the Courier & Press. Now semi-retired, Ford continues his journey as a writer with new projects, including this one on historic Bosse Field.

The Evansville native lives on the West Side with his wife of 38 years, Lorna. They have two grown children, Zac and Lacey, and one grandchild, Lacey’s daughter Evelyn.
