The Fire Department of New York City, FDNY, has had a total of 207 firehouses in Manhattan since the Paid Department replaced the Volunteer Department in 1865. This book includes the history of all 207 firehouses. For each firehouse there is a list of all the fire companies that responded, a location map and the story of the house. There is a map of the Volunteer Fire Department’s final day in 1865, several maps on the growth of the Paid Department over the years and a history of every fire company’s location. This is the first volume of four volumes on the history of the FDNY’s firehouses. The other three volumes are: The Bronx & Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens. There have been 588 firehouses in all five Boroughs.
About the Author:
Micheal L. Boucher spent 23-1⁄2 years as a Fire Department Dispatcher with the New York City Fire Department and retired in 2016. He is a recognized expert in the FDNY fire company histories and firehouses. He was a coauthor on the book The Last Alarm. He has written over forty company journals and contributed to the FDNY’s Millenium Book. He writes a monthly column on the historical fires and other historical stories on the fire company histories for the New York Fire Bell Club Newsletter. His father was a retired firefighter from Haverhill, Massachusetts. Mike and his wife live in Arizona.
