Every medal tells a story – of bravery, hard work, great achievement. But few people know how one of America’s greatest military awards, The Purple Heart, came to be. THE MEDAL WITH A HEART tells this story, and it begins in 1782 with George Washington and the Revolutionary War. Though aimed at children, it is a story for all ages.
About the Author
A love of writing and history wove its way through Karen Kulinski’s life, leading her to help create a railroad museum in her adopted home town of Griffith, Indiana and write two children’s books. THE CABOOSEMAN’S GARDEN and RESCUING IVY were inspired by her museum research.
Inspiration for Karen’s third book, THE MEDAL WITH A HEART, came from her love of reading history, in particular from an article she found in a 1980’s American History magazine. Thirty-some years and many revisions later, the article that Karen never forgot is now a book that tells the story few people know – how The Purple Heart military award came to be.
Karen earned a degree in Journalism from the University of Illinois and is a former newspaper reporter and editor, and taught elementary school in Chicago. She is an active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and is on the Board of Directors of the Griffith Historical Society.

About the Illustrator
Karen Gruntman studied children’s book illustration with Caldecott winner, Uri Shulevitz. She majored in Art at Central Michigan University with a minor in elementary education. Karen has illustrated 6 other books before “The Medal With A Heart.” After teaching elementary art for 20 years in Goshen, Indiana, Karen retired and lives with her husband and little Yorkie, “Bristol.” You can learn more about Karen and her artwork at www.karengruntman.com.
