Description
Wonders in Nature is a photo book intended to document the wonders in nature that the author, William E. “Bill” Vieth, has photographed over the last 25 years. It contains over 400 photographs from his travels around the world, including images from Africa, Brazil, Canada, and Cost Rica, and from Alaska, Canada, Colorado, Florida, and Wyoming, here in the United States.
Wonder, a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar or inexplicable. During those years he had feelings of not only amazement but also surprise and admiration as he witnessed wildlife which included birds in their natural habitat. Wildlife refers to undomesticated animals which can exist in their natural habitat. They depend only on themselves to survive. The opportunity to witness wildlife as they survive from predators, weather, reproduce and raise their young in nature has been incredible for him.
Over the years much of his photography has been concentrated on birds. He will never forget Tom Ulrich saying, early on as they traveled together, that Bill would never be any good because he didn’t “know” birds. That gave the author an entirely new perspective on wildlife photography and the techniques involved to get quality photos. He has spent time studying wildlife behavior on a number of different levels and learning the techniques to get quality photographs, such as:
• How to get close, especially when on a nest, so as not to disrupt the natural process of nest building, reproduction, incubation, feeding and fledging of the young.
• How birds coax their young out of the nest when it’s time for them to fledge
• Learn the signs that a bird is about to take flight
• Watch for distracting or man-made objects in the background
• Ways to camouflage myself and camera equipment
The photographs in this book are the result of a combination of all of these techniques.
