The Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society (LAFDHS) has obtained thousands of color and black & white historic photos, taken by numerous photographers. In LAFD – Land, Sea & Air, the LAFDHS has selected approximately 400 of the best photos available to share with the reader. The book is a pictorial history of the LAFD highlighting some of the major incidents which have occurred in the city of Los Angeles since the beginning of the fire department in 1886, with an emphasis on fire apparatus, including land apparatus, fire boats and helicopters.
LAFD – Land, Sea & Air takes the reader through the colorful history of the department, from the first volunteers who fought fires in the small pueblo that was Los Angeles, to the over 3,000 paid firefighters who protect this sprawling city today. This book includes photos of the first horse drawn steamers, the first motorized apparatus and the state of the art equipment that is used today, as well as the different emergencies to which the LAFD responds from the San Pedro Harbor to the San Fernando Valley. Since the LAFD is celebrating its 120th Birthday, it is about time for this book to be published to allow everyone to view these many fire photos. It is a must read for fire buffs and enthusiasts throughout the world.
This book is the first in a series on the history of the Los Angeles Fire Department co-authored by Dave Cox and Walt Jeager. The next books will be pictorial histories of the LAFD stations, apparatus, and fireboats.
Both authors are on the board of directors for the Los Angels Fire Department Historical Society and Museum. Dave Cox is a retired engineer for the city water system and has been a fire equipment enthusiast and model builder since childhood. He has been a member of the LAFDHS for three years and has obtained for the society ownership of most of its extensive apparatus collection. He has written numerous articles and received awards for photography.
Walt Jaeger, a retired businessman, has been a member of the society for four years and is currently its chief photographer and archivist. Walt has been photographing LAFD events and incidents for many years and is an accomplished builder of miniature fire apparatus.

Companies in Quarters: A Pictorial History of the Firehouses of the LAFD
It features everything from the early horse-drawn stations of the 1800’s to the modern stations of today. Also included are pictures of much of the apparatus that was quartered at the stations at those times plus maps and histories. This book covers the 106 current stations and over 120 former stations, including new uses for dozens of old stations.
The book is a 9 x 12 inch, coffee table style, hardbound edition containing approximately 500 photographs on 208 acid-free pages, 80 of which are in color. It also has a color dust jacket and a color cover.
Horses to Horsepower:A Pictorial History of the Apparatus of the Los Angeles City Fire Department
The 208 page book features each type of apparatus from the horse-drawn steamers and chemical hose wagons to the latest super powered engines and trucks of today. All of the photos have descriptive captions. Also covered is rescue ambulances, helicopters, fire boats, airport crash trucks, Dozer transports, wreckers, brush patrols, tankers, water towers, command and support vehicles. Full page color fire scenes with apparatus in action is shown throughout the book. A special section of the book showcases scale models of the LAFD apparatus.

The Maids of the Mist: Fireboats and the History of Fire Protection at the Port of Los Angeles
This volume on the fireboats and fire protection history of the Los Angeles harbor is the fourth publication by Dave Cox and Walt Jaeger for the Los Angeles FIre Department Historical Society. It documents in photo and text the rise of the harbor complex from its beginnings as a shallow marsh to one of the worlds largest ports.
This 9 x 12 inch, coffee-table style book features over 140 black and white photos and 190 color photos that take the reader through 150 years of history; the fires, fireboats, fire apparatus and multi-use, rapid harbor expansion.
In 192 pages the book covers the early attempts at fire fighting by local volunteers through the annexation by Los Angeles of all the small communities. You will follow the steady improvements of fire protection through the progression of bigger and more powerful fireboats and fire fighting innovations, not to mention the fires, with many photos and descriptions of the disasters that occurred over the years such as the Markay and Sansinena explosions, all the wooden dock fires, and the petroleum fires, and the boat and commercial building fires. Also included are biographies of the fire personnel that made big advances in the fire protection of the harbor such as: Chief Ralph J. Scott, Chief John C. Baly, Chief Archie J. Eley, Capt. Warner L. Lawrence, and Chief Bethel F. Gifford.
This book features all the LAFD fireboats, from the first simple attempts to the most modern and powerful boats of today, which are known by some as the Maids of the Mist.
