Day By Day is a chronology of the travels and actions of Essex-class carrier USS Intrepid CV-11. Intrepid was the most hit ship of the Pacific Fleet and was in service 31 years – longer than any other ship. Intrepid still rides the tides at Pier 86 on the Hudson River at lower Manhatton in New York. She is now the Intrepid Sea, Air, Space Museum and is open to the public.

As a Marine on board (1943-1945), I can attest to what is written here, as I kept a personal diary during this tour if duty and followed the ship’s travels and actions after I was transferred ashore. The chronology and history of the ship is computed from my diary and massive confidential documents I obtained at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

This is the gallant story of a first line carrier in World War II. I report on any and all incidents that took place. Each and everyday is covered from the first time at sea to her decommissioning (for a short period) in early 1946.
