Description
New Harmony, Indiana, nestled on the banks of the Wabash River in the southwest corner of the State, has long fascinated historians who are drawn to the town’s unique history. Most of this interest has focused on the two separate communities that settled on the Wabash.
This publication focuses on a little studied time of New Harmony’s history, that of the Civil War period. Specifically, it examines the political climate of the area during the 1860s and life in the town during the war. Special attention is given to the lives and war time activities of three important New Harmony citizens—Robert Dale Owen, Colonel Richard Owen, and Captain James Penn Bennett. The text is a study of a unique Southern Indiana town during a most difficult time in the nation’s history.
