Description

Wave the Banner takes a look at the forty year history of Madison Heights. Using words and images, the book takes a trip down memory lane at the once premier high school in Anderson, Indiana.

From 1956 through 1997 thousands of youngsters received a quality education at Madison Heights High School, where teachers taught, students learned, and reading was fundamental. Graduates went onto careers in law, emergency management, public service, teaching, visual arts, professional sports, and construction, to name a few.

Walk Tall, Be Proud, You Are A Pirate, was a phrase coined by Madison Heights High School principal Robert Collier. And that phrase is as relevant today, as it was forty years ago. Wave the Banner includes personal stories from graduates who keep the spirit of the school song, close to their hearts.

In 1997 it was decided that Madison Heights High School would close. In the early 2000s, the facility that once housed Madison Heights fell victim to the wrecking ball, turning the Home of the Pirates into a mound of rubble.
Today, as you drive past 4610 South Madison Avenue, you can feel the presence of that beautiful blond school and faintly hear students scurrying to class, teachers giving daily assignments, and those lively Friday afternoon pep sessions.

Memories are indestructible.
