M.T. Publishing Company, Inc. is excited to announce it’s latest title! In The History of the Indiana State Forests the authors tell the story of the history of each state forest property. This is important because the reader who has visited these state forests accessed each of these forests by discovering them property by property rather than as units of an administration. By approaching the project from a property perspective the reader vicariously revisits state forests that are old friends and anticipates investigating forests they have not yet discovered.
The authors did ground breaking research in the area of the Indiana conservation movement and forestry industry. Starting with the Indians at the time of contact the history of the forests is interpreted through forest inception, the impact of the baby boom, the cold war, deindustrialization, and the dawn of the twenty-first century which brings the book to the present. Authors examined the people, context, and locations as the state forests were created, developed, and the demands society makes
on state forests today. This is an examination of the interaction of humans with the land in the state forest system. As such it drew upon interdisciplinary material from cultural/human geography, natural resources, and history to analyze the forests.
